Healthcare & Employee Benefits - December newsletter

The Festive period can see an increase in workloads as employees try to finish their projects before the break, while the financial outlay at this time of year allied to bad weather can trigger stress, anxiety and depression. A recent YouGov survey showed a quarter of people (26%) said Christmas makes their mental health worse.

  • According to the Mental Health Foundation, 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions.
  • 51% of adults who felt stressed reported feeling depressed, and 61% reported feeling anxious.
  • Women in full-time employment are nearly twice as likely to have a common mental health problem as full-time employed men (19.8% vs 10.9%).

As a result, many organisations suffer from high levels of absences due to employee mental health and wellbeing. It is estimated better mental health support could save UK businesses up to £8 billion per year which emphasises the importance of having an Employee Benefits package in place, including an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

The impact of staff absence, combined with a drop in productivity, can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of an organisation. Proactive employers put in place a support structure for their employees which can help prevent or reduced the length of absence in the workplace.
